Meet the Principal, Dr. Tonya Saunders

Dear Parents and Students:
Welcome to Sammye E. Coan Middle School, home of the prowling panthers, mandarin Chinese and the Confucius Institute! The Coan family is excited to have you as a part of our team. We know this will be a successful year of exemplary academic achievement, increased parental involvement, and many accomplishments on our quest towards becoming a National Blue Ribbon School of Excellence!

Coan is a place where you will observe dynamic and rigorous instruction that is differentiated to meet the needs of all learners! Lessons, skills and activities are created for students that match their individual learning style(s).

A diverse school, our students are actively engaged in meaningful learning activities daily. As a result of these efforts, student achievement is on a dramatic shift upwards. Through the continuous efforts delivered by all stakeholders, our students will “keep the ball rolling” towards mastering the standards necessary to compete globally.

The reading reform model currently in place is Direct Instruction (DI), which is a research-based program that teaches reading to mastery with an emphasis on fluency, phonemic awareness and comprehension. Writing and spelling are also covered in this program. The Georgia Performance Standards (GPS) are thoroughly covered and mastered in reading through this model. Other core subjects and content areas are taught using GPS and other resources such as Achieve 3000, Georgia Online Assessment Systems (GOAS) and others.

Students are also provided rigorous instruction in the areas of fine arts, physical education, and foreign language. The fine arts department offers band, chorus, and visual arts. Additionally, students are challenged to remain physically fit through our physical education department. In addition to these offerings, our mandarin Chinese program is in its’ fourth year of implementation and students are mastering the language to speak it fluently.

Our Confucius Institute (the only one located in the southeastern region of the United States) house a large variety of resources that educates and familiarizes students, staff, parents, community members, and visitors with the Chinese cultures, customs, and history. Here at Coan, the Chinese culture is integrated across all content areas, thus familiarizing students with life in China.

Close cooperation between the home and school is essential to promote the best interest of the child. Parents are encouraged to visit the school and to attend meetings regularly. Mutual benefits accrue when there is a meaningful exchange of information between home and school.

Through collaborative efforts with our business partners (Gas South, Chauncey Davis Youth Foundation, and the Atlanta Chapter of Links Inc.), we are able to increase student attendance and academic achievement. Our partners work side by side with the school to ensure the best for all students. We are very proud to have these organizations serve as our partners in education.

We look forward to working with you and your child (ren) throughout this academic year. If we may be of service, please feel free to contact us here at the school. And remember, “Here at Coan, Failure is not an Option!
